In blustery, 35 mph wind conditions, the Profs met with mixed results on day one of the Bermuda 7s.
In the opening pool match, Rowan faced the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Profs dominated play in the first half with tries from Sam Portner and Shea McDowell and entered the second stanza leading 12-0. Unfortunately, tactical naivete in the second half led to turnovers and possession being kicked away unnecessarily. In the end, the Profs fell 19-12.
The second game saw Rowan matched up with the powerhouse Bermuda All-Stars. The Profs fought gallantly but ended up on the short end of the result, 24-7. Rowan’s lone try was scored by freshman sensation, John Dormann.
Despite the setbacks, the team took some positives away from the first two games and parlayed them into their first victory in the match against the University of Albany. The Profs ignored the worsening gale-force winds and powered in 4 tries for a 27-5 win. Armani Mendez put his stamp on the game with 2 tries. Also chipping in with scores were Shea McDowell, Sam Portner and Matt Opacity.
The win salvaged the day and sets up a key match tomorrow against the Stony Brook Seawolves. The Profs must win with bonus points to put themselves in a position to bring home hardware.
Check back tomorrow for more results!
