Rowan Wallops West Virginia

On a beautiful Parent’s Weekend afternoon, the Rowan Profs powered past the Mountaineers of West Virginia 64-19 in a display of open, running rugby.
The first half was a close affair with the Profs again stuttering out of the starting gate.  Although their attack was lethal, their usually formidable defense showed cracks against a fast and talented West Viriginia back line.  Man of the Match, Vito Nucci, opened the scoring with a barging run through the heart of the Mountaineers’ pack.  However, West Virginia struck back immediately with a converted try.  Both teams traded two further tries to leave the game in the balance at 20-19 with less than ten minutes left in the first half.  The rest of the match was all one way traffic, however.
The first stanza ended with the Profs holding a  33-19 lead.  The tackling frailities were discussed during half time and the second half showed a much improved defense.  The second half scoring came early and often as the Profs put on an attacking clinic against a tiring Mountaineers defense.  Hardest worker award winner, Jimmy Pendzik, put in a huge amount of work, as did senior flanker, James Mejia, who was outstanding throughout the contest.  Freshman flyhalf, Hunter Musson, controlled the contest comfortably with accurate tactical kicking and set his backs in motion time and time again to launch scores.
When the final whistle went, the score card was crowded with Prof names.  Try scorers on the day were, Nucci (3), Rhodes (2), Watt, Dormann, Mejia, DeBruhl and Musson.  John Dormann converted two tries and Musson converted 5 more.
It was a good showing by the Profs before a nice crowd.  Next week the Profs face off against conference rival, West Chester, in what promises to be a tight contest.  Come out and support your Profs!
