The Rowan Men’s Rugby team hosted the West Chester University Rams on Saturday before a large, vocal crowd. The day was unseasonable warm with plenty of sun shining.
The Profs appeared to struggle with the heat in the first half and soon found themselves under pressure as West Chester dominated the early exchanges. The Rams forwards in particular were showing greater strength in the contact situations and the Profs struggled with their physicality. The territory and possession went all the way of West Chester and resulted in three first half tries for the visitors. The Profs only managed only a penalty goal in response.
The second stanza began more positively for the Profs and a stirring comeback was underway. The Prof substitutes made a significant impact on the game and began to turn the tide Rowan’s way. An early try from center John Bohlin and two excellent tries from winger Johnny Mitchell put the Profs back in the frame. With ten minutes remaining, Rowan held a 22-17 lead.
Unfortunately, the Profs’ achilles heel, discipline, once again sunk them. A late yellow card killed the team’s momentum and lead to two late West Chester tries to seal a difficult 29-22 defeat for Rowan.
Next up is a talented Towson University side. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. in Baltimore. The Profs will look to get back on track.
