On Saturday, October 12, the Rowan Men’s rugby team played the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown, West Virginia. The morning weather was ugly, with rainy, windy and cold conditions, although the rain tapered off as the day progressed and the contest was played in dry conditions.
Rowan started out well, with an early kick and chase leading to a break from man-of-the-match, Ethan Mabilog, making his debut at blind side flanker. However, the Mountaineers held out the Profs and soon the momentum swung entirely in the hosts favor. Three quick tries left the Profs shellshocked trailing 19-0 after 15 minutes.
The Profs have been growing in maturity throughout the season and showed real grit in forcing their way back into the game. Mabilog was the first to get on the scoreboard with 20 minutes gone in the half, followed by tries from Johnny Mitchell and Steven Guevara. Despite playing into a stiff breeze that pinned them back in their own end, the Profs entered halftime tied at 19-19.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, the game stopped being a contest as Rowan ran riot, scoring 28 unanswered points before West Virginia struck back with a late consolation try. Rowan was still not done, however, and tacked on one more try to finish the game as 54-24 winners.
This was a confidence boosting win for the young Profs and they look forward to the challenge of playing Indiana University of Pennsylvania away this weekend.
