Rowan Rugby romped to another impressive away win against IUP on Saturday. The young Profs are finding their feet after a tough start to the season and have now broken the .500 mark. An impressive attack coupled with a stingy defense led to a 48-17 win.
The game began well with strategic kicking pinning IUP in their own end. The field position dominance led to a try from senior captain, Armani Mendez, off a well-worked backrow play. The Profs were on the scoreboard three minutes into the contest. Another Rowan try quickly followed and it seemed as if the Profs were going to cruise to an easy win. IUP, however, had plenty of fight left in them and fought back with three first half tries. With halftime approaching, the score was only 22-17 in Rowan’s favor and the Profs were in a tight contest.
The young Rowan team, featuring 13 freshmen and sophomores in the game day 23, has begun to show a a resilient streak in the past three games, however, and did not panic. A try from 8man, Akil DeBruhl, just before halftime opened the flood gates. By the time the final whistle went, the Profs had run in 26 unanswered points. Tries were scored by Hunter Musson, Ryan Rhatigan, Steven Guevara, Akil DeBruhl (2), and John Dormann.
Fittingly, the game’s final try was scored by hooker, Chase Shebey, capping off a dominant performance by the outstanding front row combination of Dylan Glassberg, Shebey, and Yiannis Balis.
The Profs return home this Saturday with a tough match up against the University of Delaware.
