Coach Gruber has led the Rowan Rugby Team since 2009. During his years at the helm, he has built a program that began in DIII with 15 players into a squad of more than 70 competing in DIAA. The program under Coach Gruber has experienced a meteoric rise. He guided the Profs to an EPRU championship and three MARC championships. His teams have qualified for the national playoffs on five occasions. They have reached the DII Sweet 16 four times and the Elite 8 three times. Rowan rugby finished the season ranked 5th in the nation among DII teams three times during his years in charge.
More than his contributions on the field, Coach Gruber has built a structure that emphasizes class, sportsmanship and good citizenship among the players. In 2016, he was elected to the Rowan Rugby Hall of Fame as part of the first class of inductees.
Prior to Rowan, Coach Gruber distinguished himself as a coach in the ranks of men’s club rugby with South Jersey RFC. He was the backs coach from 1990-2000. In that time period, South Jersey reached the DI Sweet 16 while competing against the top domestic teams. In addition, he was a select side coach with the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union from 1993-2000. From 1993-96 he was the head coach of the EPRU U23 team. He was also a select side coach from 1994-96 with the Eastern Rugby Union. Coach Gruber also coached the South Jersey RFC U19 team from 2006-09, leading them to state titles in 2006 and 2007.
Coach Gruber enjoyed a tremendous playing career prior to taking up coaching. He took up the game at West Chester University before moving on to the men’s club ranks with South Jersey RFC. Known as an attacking scrumhalf, he played for South Jersey from 1976-85, earning select side honors with the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union on fifteen occasions. He was elected to the South Jersey RFC Hall of Fame in 2002.
Coach Gruber is certified by USA Rugby as a level 200 coach.
He resides in Haddonfield, NJ with his wife, Tricia.
