Bill Shapiro – Scrum Coach

coach-shapiroCoach Shapiro enters his seventh season as a member of the Profs coaching staff. He is the staff’s specialist scrum coach. During his tenure, Rowan has developed an enviable reputation a dominant scrummaging team. More than ten forwards have been named to the Top 50 DII forwards under his tutelage. Coach Shapiro also works with hookers on throwing technique and has helped players transitioning to rugby quickly develop into accurate lineout throwers.

Prior to Rowan, Coach Shapiro had vast experience coaching in the ranks of men’s club level rugby. He was the head coach of South Jersey RFC from 1998-2000 and 2005-2007. He was also an assistant coach from 2002-2004 while South Jersey RFC played in the ultra-competitive EPRU DII. He developed numerous players who went on to be selected for representative and Super League teams.

He has been certified by USA Rugby as a level coach 200 coach.

Coach Shapiro enjoyed a distinguished playing career with South Jersey RFC from 1985-97 where he played over 200 A side matches. He captained the squad in 1997. In addition, he was a select side player for the EPRU on 26 occasions (twice captaining the side) and toured with the inaugural MARFU select side. Coach Shapiro represented the USA 1993 and 1997 in the Maccabiah Games. He career culminated in his selection to the South Jersey RFC Hall of Fame.

Coach Shapiro graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY where he quarterbacked the football team.  He resides in Cherry Hill  with his wife and daughter. He is a US Navy civilian engineer.
