Rowan fields two competitive 7s squads during the spring semester. There is also a developmental squad for less experienced players. The Prof’s 7s routinely compete in the MARC 7’s Series as well as tournaments throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
The Rowan 7’s Team is led by Head Coach Tim Smith, and is assisted by Chris “Pudge” Ryan, Bill Stom and Scott Palena. Under Coach Smith’s leadership, the team has experienced a meteoric rise. In 2017, Rowan qualified for the USA Rugby D2 National Championships and won the bowl.
Rowan’s stellar play at the 7’s National playoffs and in high profile tournaments around the Mid-Atlantic region rewarded them with invitations to the College Rugby Championships (CRC’s) at the Talen Energy Stadium in Philadelphia. The team has competed in the City Series portion of the tournament, twice finishing 3rd and most recently in 2019 falling just short in the Championship final.
Since 2017, the 7’s Team has made an annual spring break tradition of traveling to Bermuda to participate in the Ariel Re Bermuda International 7’s Tournament.
Since mid February 2020, the COVID-19 Pandemic has placed the 7’s team on hiatus. The coaches and players all remain optimistic rugby activities will be permitted to resume in the near future, and they can continue to put Rowan University 7’s on the map.
